One of the largest engines on the Pere Maquette, No. 1114, jumped the tracks on the Martha Street curve and plowed through the McLaughlin Brothers Elevator.
Traffic was blocked for 14 hours while two crews and two of the Pere Marquette's largest cranes worked to pull it out of the building, allowing passage along the side track. The main line wasn't opened until the following morning.
