In 1970 a group of Czechoslovak mountaineer organized a expedition to Huascaran, Peru'70. Its aim was to conquer the highest peak of Huascaran Sud.
At half past three in the morning, 31 May, it happened. The ground has quaked. Shocks of 7.5 on the Richter scale (some sources indicate different strength in the range of 7 to 8) of the northern face of Huascaran tumbled down a huge avalanche of ice and stones. It slipped into the depths of two and a half kilometre. Its wide was almost two kilometres at the bottom. Its right edge hit our climbers base camp. None of them survived.

Czechoslovak expedition has the tragic primate - the first time in the history of mountaineering expedition to the whole lost one man. They were Arnošt Cernik (44), Milan Cerny (26), Vilem Heckel (52), Jirí Jech (38), Valeriano Karoušek (41), Jaroslav Krecbach (24), Milos Matras (37), Ladislav Majsner (34), Milan Nahlovsky (26), Bohumil Nejedlo (38), Zdenek Novotny (32), Jirí Rasl (34) Svatopluk Ulvr (32) and Vaclav Urban (35).

V roce 1970 se do Peru vydala ceskoslovenská horolezecká expedice Peru '70. Jejím cílem bylo dobytí nejvyššího vrcholu Huascarán Sud [Uaskaran Sud].
V pul ctvrté ráno, 31. kvetna, se to stalo. Zachvela se zem. Otresy 7,5 stupne Richterovy stupnice (nekteré zdroje uvádejí odlišnou sílu v rozmezí 7 až 8) shodily ze severní steny Huascaránu ohromnou lavinu ledu a kamení. Ta se sesula do hlubiny dvou a pul kilometru, dole dosahovala šírky témer dvou kilometru. Její pravý okraj zasáhl základní tábor našich horolezcu. Nikdo z nich neprežil.

Ceskoslovenská expedice tak získala tragický primát - poprvé v dejinách horolezectví zahynula celá expedice do jednoho muže.
