Randolph County dates to October 5, 1795 when it was formed from a portion of St. Clair County, at the time a portion of the Northwest Territory. The county was named from noted Revolutionary War soldier and statesman, U.S. Attorney General Edmund Randolph, a former Governor of Virginia. The county became a portion of Indiana Territory in 1800 and Illinois Territory in 1809. Illinois was admitted to the Union in 1818. The Illinois Territory capitol and original state capital were located in Randolph County in Kaskaskia until 1820. The county seat was originally also located in Kaskaskia until the Flood of 1844 when the Seat was relocated to Chester.
The current courthouse was built in 1974 replacing an earlier one located on the same site. One of the interesting features of the courthouse is the enclosed observation deck on its top floor offering a great panoramic view of the surrounding area.
