In der Nähe von Süchteln - so erzählt eine Legende, stand ein dem heiligen Johannes dem Täufer geweihtes Gotteshaus im Johannistal. Plötzlich soll das Gotteshaus im Schoß der Erde versunken sein und es bildete sich an dieser Stelle ein Weiher.
Die Sage vom Johannistal
Vor vielen hundert Jahren stand im Johannistal
Zu Nutzen frommer Christen ein Kirchlein eng und schmal.
Die Gläubigen der Gegend, sie wallten hier zu Gott,
Erflehten seinen Segen gar oft in bittrer Not.
Als einst zur Abendandacht, just am Johannistag,
Des Herren Lob zu preisen, vereint sich hat die Schar,
Da fing es an zu blitzen, es donnert, heult der Sturm,

Da sah man statt des Kirchleins ein düster schwarzes Moor.
Und aus dem Sumpfe sah man die Kirchturmspitze
Niemand weiß genau, wann die Kirche in Süchteln gegründet worden ist und man weiß auch nicht mehr genau, wo und ob sie dort gestanden hat. Man weiß aber, dass um 800 n.Chr. in Süchteln ein schweres Erdbeben war, so dass die Legende durchaus der Wahrheit entsprechen könnte. Außerdem lag Süchteln an der Kreuzung zweier Römerstraßen und in der ersten christlichen Zeit baute man Gotteshäuser bevorzugt an wichtigen Vekehrsknotenpunkten.
