The cornerstone was laid Sept. 19, 1877, by President Rutherford B. Hayes on the first visit of a president to the South since the Civil War.

The Customs House was designed by William A. Potter of New York and contains four sections with the center portion and clock tower being the first completed in 1882, a rear portion completed in 1903, and two side wings completed in 1916.

Opened in 1882 at 701 Broadway, it originally housed the city's post office on the ground floor. The federal Treasury Department offices were on the second, and Justice Department and courtrooms on the third.

The Customs House is an considered an outstanding example of the Victorian Gothic style of architecture.
