Right in front of the famous Anthony's Pier 4 Restaurant in South Boston is an unusual object on display for a seafood restaurant to have - a narrow gauge locomotive.

According to a couple sites, the locomotive is a narrow gauge 0-4-0 steam engine. The Surviving Steam Engines Web Site said that the height of the steam dome indicates that this was likely a tank engine.

Sites either listed the railroad it served as 'unknown' or BAP Co., which I was unable to find out what that might have been. Perhaps it ran along the piers in the area, or it could have been brought to this location. The restaurant web site isn't helpful, there. It has been repainted to the colors of the restaurant and Anthony's Pier 4 lettering is on the cab. Some sites have "L7" as the number of the engine. On the engine, now, is "25." Steamlocomotive.com states that the builder was the Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

The North East Rails site has a page for the Vulcan Iron Works and has many photographs of engines that were built there. Several tank engines have a similar appearance to the one on display (though this one is missing the saddle tank).

This locomotive is well painted and in reasonably good display condition. The engine is accessible; you can touch the valves in the cab or trace corners. I doubt that you could climb on it, however.

Anthony's Pier 4 is located on 140 Northern Avenue in South Boston, and is between the World Trade Convention Center and the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA). The locomotive is open to the restaurant parking lot or from the art museum.
