From the official Diocese website, located here, the church history states "Father Justin Joseph Claris celebrated the first Mass in Brashear (now Morgan City) on Jan. 13, 1859. A chapel, built to the honor of St. Justin, burned that same year and Morgan City had no church until 1867, when a modest frame church was built. Cornerstone for the present church was laid in 1902, but the building was not completed until 1905. The church was restored in 1983. A unique feature of the parish plant is the separate baptistry adjacent to the church.
