The congregation of the Wolf River Methodist Church was established in 1840 in the Wolf River Valley of Tennessee. The adjacent cemetery is the final resting place of some of the areas early settlers including Conrad Pile. The oldest marked grave in the cemetery is that of Charlie Paul who was buried here in 1826. This was also the home church of World War I hero Sergeant Alvin C. York who is credited with single-handedly capturing 132-German soldiers and killing 25 more in the Argonne Forest. For his actions Sergeant York was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and the French Croix de Guerre. Sergeant York and several members of his family rest in the adjacent cemetery.
