The post was originally named for McKinley Pound and was chartered in 1920. It became inactive in 1933 but was reorganized in 1945 as the Pound-Uhre Post.
Pound was killed in WWI at the battle of Meuse-Argonne and Dale Uhre was killed near Guadalcanal in June 1943.
Located on the west side of Davison County, South Dakota and on I90, Mt Vernon is a bedroom community with ties to Mitchell, 10 miles to the east.
Its population in 2007 was 470, down about 2% from the 2000 census.
Its heritage is German, Norwegina, Dutch, English, Irish, and Czech.
The town was incorporated in 1903.
