Named for Joe Drips, who was the first man from the community to lose his life in WWI.
Kimball is located in Brule County, South Dakota, at the junction of I-90 and SD Highway 45.
The population of Kimball in July 2008 was 692, a 7% decrease from the 2000 census.
The town was settled by German, Czech, Irish, Norwegian, and English immigrants and was incorporated in 1889.
Kimball was first known as Stake 48 on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad line going west out of Mitchell, South Dakota. In 1880, the first homestead claims were made in the vicinity of Stake 48. Kimball was organized as a village in the spring of 1883.
The Kimball post is part of District 6 and has a membership goal of 81 for the 2010 year. Members are very active and they built a new post home in 2009.
