The land for the house was originally obtained in 1498 by William Cope who started the building, then it was later demolished in the 18th century with its remains being used as a farmhouse. There are remaining parts surviving from 1498 in the south west tower and south wing; though some reports conflict with this saying that the earliest surviving architectural remains are from the 16th century.
There are extensive grounds with beautiful landscaping including five ornamental ponds.
In its beginnings the house was not complete at the time of William Cope's death in 1513 but was finally completed by his heir in the 1520's.
It is unconfirmed but thought that the house contains material from stone salvaged from Deddington Castle.
