Thsi mill called "Rijn en Lek" (because this is the place where the river Rhine changes its name into Lek) was bullt in 1659 on top of a medieval city gate, the "Leuterpoort" or "loiter gate" This square Gothic gate connected the Dijkstraat in the city to the Lekdijk in the direction of Amerongen. This mill of the stellingmolen type was originally used to mill oak bark for treating leather, and was later used as a grain mill.
The mill is world famous by misunderstanding: it used to be designated as the windmill in the famous Ruysdael painting, but the mill he painted in 1660 was located further down the river Lek. Unfortunately of that mill, not much remains.
The mill is open to visits and parties on prior arrangement through the VVV in Wijk bij Duurstede.
