Hemphill is considered the crash site of Columbia although pieces were scattered all over Texas and Louisiana. Recovery teams decended on and operated out of Hemphill for months following the disaster. Major components including the nose gear and the experiment module were recovered in the area. Remains of four of the astronauts were recovered within four miles of Hemphill.
This site is a memorial to Columbia's crew and the massive recovery effort in wich two individuals lost their lives.
