Our Lady of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church overlooking Brentwood Bay was originally established by Oblate priests as a mission to serve the native indians in the area. In 1865, Father Mandart founded the Saanich Mission and built a rudimentary church.
By 1876 he had built a small church, which was blessed and dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin by Bishop Seghers in 1876. In 1893 Fr. Adrian Joseph Vullinghs performed his first baptism in Saanich. He served the area from 1893 to 1909 and built the present church and a residence on West Saanich Road. The church is now a satellite church of St Elizabeth's in Sidney as the Saanich Peninsula Parish of the Roman Catholic Church.
