This grand arch is one of the many monuments and temples in the famous landscape gardens of Stowe. It was designed by Thomas Pitt and was built in 1764-1767. It stands at the summit of the Grand Avenue hill.
It is 60 feet in height and width and and was built as an eye-catcher which it certainly is. This view is from the southern approach road to Stowe. The large columns contain two four storeyed houses in each!
The arch is a symbol of wealth and influence and the only person known to have passed through it as an entrance is Queen Victoria when it was opened.
Type: Triumphal (Monument/Memorial)
Subtype: Sculpture
