Mary Seacole was a pioneering Jamaican nurse.

At the outbreak of the Crimean war she travelled to London to offer her services as a nurse. She was rejected, due to her colour. Undeterred she travelled to Turkey where she set up "the British Hotel" providing food, medicine and surgical care to all. See the links below for more information on her life.
