Here on Peter's Creek, at the mouth of Whitewater, was a log school with greased paper windows, a dirt floor and split log seats for students from Bucks Garden to Meadows (Keslers Cross Lanes). It was opened in 1809. The first teacher was Joseph Pierson.
This historical marker was placed in 2005 by the Nicholas County Historic Landmark Commission, the Historic and Genealogical Society, and the West Virginia Division of Archives and History.
