Johannes Gensfleisch, called Gutenberg (1398 - 1468), born and died in Mainz, was a German goldsmith and printer who was the first European to use movable type printing, in around 1439, and the global inventor of the mechanical printing press. His major work was the Gutenberg Bible. As of 2007, there are 49 Gutenberg Bibles known to exist worldwide.
