"When constructed in 1908, Madison Park Apartments (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) became the largest wooden structure west of the Mississippi. Damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the building was vacant until 1995, when EBALDC completed renovation.
In addition to providing affordable housing, Madison Park Apartments offers residents and community organizations a large community room, and leases space to the Oakland Unified School District, who provides ESL and computer classes to adults. Located across from Lake Merritt BART station, Madison Park Apartments is conveniently located within a short walk of the Oakland Museum, schools, and parks.
The building was nominated for the Maxwell Awards of Excellence from Fannie Mae and won the preservation Design Award from the California Preservation Foundation in 1996." (
