Text of marker:
In 1849, the Beaver Coin Mint stood just upstream of thie view point where the Oregon Exchange Company transformed California gold dust into fine and ten dollar currency, stamped with a beaver on one side. The "beaver money" remained plentiful until 1854 when the U.S. Mint at San Francisco bought up the coins at a premium because they contained more gold than the standard value.
