According to a sign at the Wildlife Refuge entrance:
"Neary Lagoon is thought to have been an oxbow bend of the San Lorenzo River which gradually became dissociated from the main stream. Originally, the lagoon covered 75 acres in the area that extended to Laurel Street and Pacific Avenue. Today the lagoon is a small (14 acre) fresh water marsh enclosed within a 44-acre park and wildlife refuge."
The boardwalk crosses a stretch of open water, skirting the tule marsh while providing good viewing points. The boardwalk section is about one quarter mile long. It connects to park trails on both ends.
Approximate boardwalk length (feet): 1400
What is the boardwalk over?: very shallow lagoon water, and dense stands of riparian vegetation
Boardwalk material: wood
