A plaque at the site reads: "ON January 8, 1907, the Northwestern Pacific Railroad was incorporated as a consolidation of 7 railways in northern California. Jointly owned by the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Atchinson Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, its southern terminals were at Tiburon and Sausalito, where passengers and freight cars connected by ferryboats to San Francisco. By 1909, most passenger trains terminated at Sausalito, while Tiburon became the main freight terminal and shop facility. Railroad activites continued at Tiburon until 1967, when the last train departed."
Today the depot is a museum, divided into two sections. One section is for ferry history and one for rail history. The museum is open April through October.
