Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 Fulcrum A 1983
General History:
Developed in the midst of the Cold War, the MiG-29 (NATO code name: Fulcrum A) was a response to advanced U.S. fighters such as the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon.
The design of the MiG-29 began in the 1970s as the Soviets analyzed captured Western aircraft and used their agents to buy or steal high technology sub-systems. One of the most important was the radar which was reportedly developed from that of an F-14 Tomcat the Soviets obtained from Iran. To make it more utilitarian, the MiG-29 was equipped with durable landing gear and intake grates allowing it to operate from primitive airfields.
Consistently outperforming other fighter jets of its day, the MiG-29 became a force to be reckoned with. Many countries moved to procure the Fulcum, including India, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Cuba, Peru, and all Soviet Bloc nations.
The MiG-29 saw combat with the Iraqi Air Force and with Yugoslavia in the Bosnian campaign. It remains a potent part of many air arms aruond the world.
