Grumman TF-9J Cougar - 1956

General History:

During the Korean War, the Grumman F9F Panther was the Navy's workhorse fighter aircraft, bu it was out classed by the Soviet MiG-15.  In response, Grumman created the F9F-6 Cougar.  Sine the Panther was such a robust aircraft, Grumman retained the pasic layout, but swept the wings, added an "all flying" stabilizer, and upgraded the engine for higher performance.

Because flying from carriers is a demanding task, the Nay needed a high performance trainer to introduce student pilots to carrier operations, for which the Cougar was chosen.  The Navy acquired 377 two-seat F9F-8T's (changed to TF-9J in 1962) to use in training they remained in service until 1974.  Several TF-9Js flew as Forward Air Control aircraft in Vietnam.

This aircraft is on loan from the National Museum of Naval Aviation, and is painted as the narrator's aircraft for the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels flight demonstration team.
