James Cooper Power and his wife built this log cabin on what had been Cherokee Indian land. This farm land includes the small remains of a Native American village to the north.
James Hyde and family came to the area and began farming with the Power family until 1917. At that time the land value was low and that helped Jesse, James Hyde’s son, to buy the 135 acres. From 1930 all the way into the 1980s the Hyde family farmed this land. They did this without upgrading to modern machinery. To this day, there is no plumbing, electricity, and a Franklin stove for heat.
Thanks to Jesse’s two sons, JC and Buck for knowing the importance of this land it is being preserved. After Buck’s death J.C. made an agreement with the Trust for Public land giving them the right to buy the land after his death. In June 2008 this was done. Sometime in the summer of 2009 our children will be able to walk through those gates and see a farm frozen in 1820.

Go enjoy. Stand at the gate and look at the old well and see the old barns. The log cabin is there before you. Just standing there it’s peaceful, no city sounds.
