The University of California, Irvine opened in 1965. Today, it has over 27,000 students and 1,100 faculty members. Its schools and laboratories have made it a major research center, and numerous important studies have taken place there. In addition to science, the school has a focus on cultural affairs. UCI has hosted numerous internationally-known speakers, including former President Jimmy Carter, the Dalai Lama, Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, and environmental activist Dr. Wangari Maathai of Kenya.
UCI also happens to be the largest employer in Orange County, with an economic impact of $4.2 billion.
