In 1924, James B. Duke, the son of Washington Duke, established the Duke Endowment which supports charitable causes in the Carolinas. A $19,000,000 grant was then provided to Trinity College in Durham to rebuild East Campus and build a new West Campus complex. With this gift, the college was renamed Duke University.
James B. Duke's statue is prominently placed in the center of West Campus, right in front of the Duke Chapel. As is befitting a man whose family fortune began with tobacco growing and manufacturing, James B. Duke is holding a cigar. Sadly, Mr. Duke did not live to see West Campus. He passed away in 1925.
