"Atwater is a city located along U.S. Route 99 in Merced County, California, United States. The population as of August 19, 2006 is 27,972.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.4 square miles (14.0 km²). 5.4 square miles (14.0 km²) of it is land and 0.18% water.
