The plaque reads: "The Sainte Claire Club was organized in 1888 by a group of distinguished local citizens, including James Phelan - banker, US Senator and former mayor of San Francisco. San Jose's oldest men's club has occupied this handsome structure since its construction in 1893. Designed by A. Page Brown, the building has unsual ornamental brick detailing. It was damaged in the 1906 Earthquake and restored in 1907."
