The moon & palmetto figure prominently in South Carolina history, and it was no surprise to find them incorporated in the design of this humblest of utilitarian devices. The design dates back to the U.S. Revolutionary War with the palmetto tree representing the defense of Fort Moultrie from the British in June 1776, and the crescent moon representing the emblem worn by South Carolina soldiers.
The covers used by the SC Department of Highways & Public Transportation (which existed by that name from 1977-1993) incorporated these 2 symbols superimposed over an outline of the state and are arguably one of the more attracrive iron disks to be found in the U.S.
A number of these now-obsolete covers were found while travelling between Myrtle Beach and Murrells Inlet - this one was chosen at random.
