Split Enz were New Zealand's most successful band ever, surviving for more than twelve years and above all proving that a Kiwi band could cut it in the international arena.

Of their many hit records, their top ten hit of 1982 was a particular favourite with Kiwis, "Six Months In A Leaky Boat" with great lyrics that describe our country so well.....
"Aotearoa, rugged individual, glisten like a pearl at the bottom of the world."

No part of New Zealand is far from the coast and, from its thousands of bays and coves, New Zealanders venture forth from an early age in all manner of boats. An often quoted, though difficult to prove, statistic is that there are more boats per head of population in New Zealand than anywhere else in the world.

Known as a nation of do-it-yourself people, many of these boats are home-built. Unlike some other parts of the world, sailing in New Zealand has never been an elitist pursuit. Many of New Zealand's top sailors began their careers in boats that emerged from hours of devoted labour in garages and backyard sheds.

We chose the location of Mt Hobson summit to view the yachts sailing on the Waitemata Harbour in Auckland, City of Sails. The translation of the Maori word 'Waitemata' means "sparkling waters" and seems apropriate for the song lyrics, 'glisten like a pearl'.

Relevant Verse:
Six Months In A Leaky Boat. Split Enz. 1982. When I was a young boy I wanted to sail 'round the world That's the life for me, living on the sea Spirit of a sailor circumnavigates the globe The lust of a pioneer will acknowledge no frontier I remember you by thunderclap in the sky Lightning flash, tempers flare, 'round the horn if you dare I just spent six months in a leaky boat Lucky just to keep afloat Aotearoa, rugged individual glisten like a pearl At the bottom of the world The tyrany of distance didn't stop the cavalier So why should it stop me? I'll conquer and stay free Ah come on all you lads, let's forget and forgive There's a world to explore Tales to tell back on shore I just spent six months in a leaky boat Six months in a leaky boat Shipwrecked love can be cruel Don't be fooled by her kind There's a wind in my sails, will protect and prevail I just spent six months in a leaky boat Nothing to it leaky boat
