The track used to be a single line and belonged to the Midland Railway Thrapston Midland service. There were two railways crossing in Thrapston, the other being the London and North Western Railway.

Crossing the River Nene and its various tributaries the viaduct traverses beautiful waterside and has country views.

The railways were closed and track taken away after Beeching' Act in 1963. Nowadays it is a pathway.
