The library was originally constructed as a Public Works Administration project in 1937-1940 and was named after Fred Lewis Patte (Prof. of American Literature) upon his death in 1950. Additions were made in 1953, 1966, 1972 and most recently in 1997-2000 by the creation of the adjoining Paterno library (named for our institutional football coach and his wife after they donated several million dollars towards its creation). It is unclear exactly how many books are housed here, but the full university library system includes over 5 million cataloged volumes. Posted hours are for M-R during the semester. It is also open shorter hours through the weekend and during the semester breaks.
