To Commemorate the Valor of the Soldiers of Johnson County in Defense of the Union, 1861-1865
This fountain is erected by John T. Vawter, 1905.

From the History of Johnson County by Elba L. Branigin, we learn that Mr. Vawter was a Freemason. The design of this memorial on Page 64 (see the gallery) is different than actual, with only the top figure being in both. He was also the school president in 1883, then treasurer in 1883. Later, he was the president of Franklin National Bank.
