Lakehurst Naval Station, as commonly known, is famous for it's "lighter-than-air" blimp programs in the 1920-1960s. The famous Hindenburgh crash happened here. Being the Navy's leading research center for launch and recovery aircraft equipment, Lakehurst is a natural "shoe-in" for Blue Angels shows.
The concept of the Blue Angels came at the end of World War II, by Chester W. Nimitz, Chief of Naval Operations, to keep a public interst in naval avation. The first formation flight demonstration was in June 1946, and has been thrilling audiences ever since. The now famous "Diamond Formation" was introduced by Lt. Commander Robert Clarke in 1947.
The squadron has progressed it's aircraft over time. This Boeing is 56 feet long, 15.3 feet high, has a wingspan of 40.4 and has two General Electric F404-GE-400 low-bypass, turbofan engines. The Blue Angels have been using the Boeing Hornet for more than 20 years.
The aircraft sits on 549 at the main entrance gate to the Naval Station.
