This is one of four signs in a kiosk at the Brothers Rest Area.
Marker Name: Desert Dreams . . . Brothers Area 1845 to Present
Marker Text: The Land Remembers: Geologic processes, climate, and humans have all left their mark on this land. For thousands of years Indian people utilized resources in the Brothers area. Using fires, they created an environment that favored the proliferation of roots, seeds, and animals such as rabbits, deer, and antelope. During the past 150 years, Anglo-Americans built roads, introduced grazing animals, plowed under native grasses, sunk wells that lowered the water table and created an environment that favors expansive stands of juniper, sagebrush, and noxious weeds. People shape their surroundings in an effort to adapt to the local environment and the environment, in turn, shapes the character of the local people.
