The Jay Covered Bridge spans the East Branch of the Au Sable River. It connected the early industries along the river corridor with both the bustling Hamlet of Jay as well as the larger Adirondack and Champlain regions. The last remaining covered bridge in norther New York, the historic Jay Covered Bridge is a signature visual element in the Au Sable River Valley.

The Jay Covered Bridge, built in 1857, represents an excellent example of the massive Howe Truss. This bridge support system was patented by William Howe, a millwright from Massachusetts, in 1840. The structure utilizes adjustable vertical iron tie-rods in place of the traditional wooden panel uprights, strengthening the bridge and increasing its capacity.

Description of Covered Bridge:
The Jay Covered Bridge replaced an earlier bridge which was destroyed by a flood in 1856. In 1857, George M. Burt was contracted to build the new bridge. The bridge he built, a Howe Truss covered bridge, is one of only twenty-three covered bridges still existing in New York State. Additionally, it is the only covered bridge in the Adirondack Mountain Region. The last half of the 20th Century was not kind to the Jay Covered Bridge. In 1953, a heavily loaded truck plunged through the floor of the bridge. To repair the structure, 80 feet of the original bridge was removed from the damaged northern end. An approach ramp was built; concrete pillars and steel beams were installed to strengthen and support the structure. In 1997, the Jay Covered Bridge was removed from service and replaced by a temporary steel bridge. The covered bridge you see today is a reproduction of the original Jay Covered Bridge. It has been painstakingly restored to once again serve the Hamlet of Jay, while remaining a striking architectural and historical feature in the Adirondack Mountain landscape.
