Long Description:
During the Civil War, at the age of 14 James Campbell served as a messenger of Union General John C. Fremont. After the war he worked with survey parties laying out railroads in Missouri, he was a fast learner and soon was leading the survey parties. He invested his earnings in land in front of the tracks and sold this land to settlers at a substantial profit. He then began investing in distressed bonds issued by the new communities in Missouri often at 10 cents on the dollar, recognizing that these bond would recover in price. He amassed a sizable fortune on his investments. He also invested in railroads and streetcar business and became the Chairman of the Board for North American Company, the parent company of United Railways and Union Electric Company. Prior to his death he was approached by St. Louis University for a donation which he declined saying he would give money to those wanted to and when he wanted. When his will was disclosed in 1914 he had bequeathed to St. Louis University Medical School a substantial portion of his fortune. This bequeath was kept a secret even from his lawyers as he had his will drawn with a blank space for him to write in this bequeath, which he did in his own hand.
