The Hydraulic Lift Locks in Peterborough are one of two built on the Trent-Severn Waterway. These two are the first ones constructed in North America.
The locks are also:
- FIRST locks to be constructed with concrete
- FIRST to use air filled seals
- FIRST to use drop gates
- FIRST to use cast-steel presses for the rams
The locks were constructed in 1896 and remain the highest hydraulic lift locks in the world. An amazing piece of engineering that does not use any external power to move the boats.
