From the park informational sign:
"Raised in Switzerland, Martin Tomasini emigrated to the United States in 1868 and settled in California. He came to Carmel Valley in 1873 and began development of a dairy. By 1875 he had met and married Concepcion Mariano Soberanes. The land on which this barn now stands was given to the Tomasini's as Concepcion's dowry. No one had previously lived on or farmed this land so it can be assumed that Tomasini himself built the barn between 1875 and 1880 to accommodate his dairy operations"

It goes on to say:
"The Tomasini/Cooper barn is virtually the last remaining connection with the old farming days in the Valley..."

The barn is being maintained in a state of arrested decay by the park, repairing what is necessary to keep it from falling down, but not restoring it to full use.
