The
history of the copies of the Declaration is complicated. The document that is generally considered
the Declaration is an engrossed copy, the one that was signed and is in the National Archives. In 1820, Secretary of State John Quincy Adams commissioned William J Stone to make an engraved version of the engrossed copy. When it was finished in 1823, Congress asked that 200 copies be made from this engraving. This is one of those 200 copies, of which only about 30 exist today. It is a gift to the Henry Ford Museum from Dr. M.S. Seip.
Coordinates are for the museum entrance. Appropriately, the museum itself is a replica of Independence Hall. The museum is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas from 9:30am-5pm. Regular tickets are $15, children are $11. A $5 parking fee also applies.
