The Kunming Garden in Pukekura Park, Brooklands, was a gift from the Mayor of Kunming following the signing of a sister city agreement between New Plymouth District and Kunming, China in August 2003. Chinese craftsmen worked alongside local landscapers and builders on the garden, which includes traditional Chinese features such as a moon gate framing the intricate pavilion and garden, dragon motifs and hand-crafted wood carvings.
All materials, with the exception of foundations for the moon gate and pavilion, were prepared in Kunming and shipped to New Plymouth. This included all timber, tiles and concrete blocks for the structures. The timber and tiles were all hand carved prior to leaving Kunming.
The colourful Pagoda is often used as a setting for garden wedding ceremonies and photos.
