Grand on the Puebloan scale, Hovenweep Castle is a large, well preserved ruin in the Square Tower Group of Hovenweep National Monument.

"HOVENWEEP CASTLE, on the north rim of Square Tower Canyon, is the best preserved building in the Monument. It was built in two wings, not unlike the L-shaped fuedal manors of Europe, and contained, besides sleeping and living chambers, several towers and underground ceremonial kivas. The walls of this building are massive affiars of rock and mud mortar, some of them still rising more than twenty feet."

Hovenweep Castle was grand on a scale of housing units. It was either a very large family, or extended family. This structure sits along the canyon rim, overlooking the Square Tower. Visitors can get close to the structure, though not inside it. The mason work on the walls is impressive, as is it's age and condition.
The Castle is along the hiking trail behind the Visitor's Center in the Square Tower Group.
