The Thornton-Farrar AMVET Post was created by the older brother of Curtis Francis Thornton, in honor of his service in the Marine Corp..
Curtis was killed while on active duty in Vietnam in January of 1969.
Curtis had applied for membership into the VFW post of North Syracuse just 1 week before his unfortunate death. Another young man from the North Syracuse area was accepted into the post on the same day he lost his life in Vietnam. These two men were the only "card carrying" members of the North Syracuse post to ever have been killed in action. So years later, to carry on the name of his fallen brother, James Thornton formed the North Syracuse AMVET post at this location and it became known as the Thornton-Farrar AMVET Post# 729.
