On July 14-15th, 1777, George Washington use this home as his headquarters while leading his troops from Morristown to the Hudson Valley.
In 1778 Tory raids became a problem in the Bergen county seat, so the county court was moved to this home for 2 years.

Marker text: This Dutch Colonial house was built by Hendrick Van Allen before the Revolutionary War on a farm that consisted of over two-hundred acres. General George Washington used this house as his Headquarters on July 14-15, 1777, when he moved his troops over ”extremely deep and miry roads” from Morristown, New Jersey to Smith’s Clove, New York.
