The track inland of Cannery Row used to be vital for freight to and from the canneries, and it also used to be the main connection between the small town of Pacific Grove, at the end of the line, and the larger cities to the north and east. The rails were torn out (except in this one short block) and the rail bed converted to the Recreation Trail between Monterey and Pacific Grove.
This old passenger car was turned into the Cannery Row Welcome Center tourist office, but unfortunately it has closed with no sign of whether it might open again.
