Completed in January 2000 to house the permanent Garman Ryan art collection. This is one of the biggest personal collections in the world. The collection was donated to the people of Walsall by Kathleen Garman, who was born in Wednesbury. She was married to Jacob Epstien.
The Gallery was designed by Caruso St John and built at a cost of 21 million pounds.
Spread over five floors the Gallery also holds temporary exhibitions, often showcasing the work of new and local artists. The ground floor holds the Discovery Gallery, a space especially for children. The fifth floor terrace gives excellent views of the area, including the historic St.Matthews church.
The Gallery was officially opened by the Queen on 5th May 2000.
