The Mallinckrodt family became involved in the chemical manufacturing business, particularly pharmaceuticals. Three brothers, Gustav, Otto, and Edward founded G. Mallinckrodt & Company in 1867. When the company was incorporated in 1882 as the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, Edward became its president. The Mallinckrodt Chemical Works continued to expand and Edward further expanded into the manufacture of anhydrous ammonia which was used in refrigeration. Edward invested heavily in real estate and had vast holdings in the St. Louis area. He was so gave extensively to hospitals and universities.
