Despite its modest start and the challenge of rebuilding after two devastating fires, St. Anne Parish has stood as a cornerstone to Catholics in Escanaba for more than 100 years. Loyal parishioners built their own school, and a tremendous modern church facility, and formed many successful programs.

St. Anne Church was formed by the French-Canadian members of St. Joseph Church who wanted to preserve their own language and customs formed their own church in 1887. The modest structure built of wood was dedicated to St. Anne Sept. 30, 1888. Father Joseph Martel was appointed its first pastor. In the subsequent five years, many improvements were made to the church, including construction of a rectory.

In April 1919, the church suffered extensive damage in a fire believed to have been caused by defective wiring. But the people took up the work of renovating and making improvements to the church. Money was raised through a subscription drive. Among the improvements made at this time was the addition of a chapel and sacristy.

Nearly 30 years later, at the same time extensive upgrades were being made to the parish school, the church was again devastated by fire. On July 15, 1947, a blaze of undetermined origin destroyed the church. Despite the massive setback, the people continued to rally for their church. A temporary chapel was set up in the parish hall in the basement of the school.

After the 1947 fire St. Anne’s was moved from its original location to the southwest area of the growing city. The massive undertaking came to fruition six years later. On April 26, 1953 the modern facility was dedicated. In 1962, following major parish improvements, plans were made for a new school, rectory and convent, all of which were dedicated in September 1963.
