Riga Academy, built in 1811, was a stop on the Canandaigua-Batavia stage line, as well as a tavern. It closed in 1845 when the stage line was eliminated due to competition from the Rochester & Buffalo Railroad.
The building was purchased for $1,000.00 by the Congregational Church for use as an Academy for local children. The Academy opened it'd doors in 1847 to 155 students.
The Civil War brought an end to the Riga Academy, closing in 1861.
